NITA's Deposition To Trial: Indianapolis program offers participants the chance to work on a case from the initial depositions through the jury trial. By taking the full program, you will use the proven NITA method of experiential learning to enhance your taking and defending depositions, trial skills in the courtroom and your use of technology and exhibits.
About the Deposition Portion:
“I went from trembling at the thought of taking a deposition
to anxiously awaiting my first opportunity . . . .”
Can you walk into a deposition convinced you’ll get the information you need and secure the admissions you want from the opposition? Or if it’s your witness being deposed, do you know how to prepare them for the experience and protect them from walking into traps?
These are some of the abilities you’ll hone when you take a Deposition Skills program from NITA. For over forty years, we’ve offered advocacy training taught by a veritable “who’s who” of advocacy experts—trial lawyers, judges, and law professors—from across the country, volunteers who donate their time and dedicate it to your professional development.
About the Trial Portion:
Are you ready to step into a courtroom with the ease and composure of a lawyer with by countless wins at trial? What about walking into a tense negotiation showing so much confidence that opposing counsel settles the case rather than risks facing you in the courtroom?
For over forty years, NITA has offered trial skills programming taught by the best trial lawyers in the country, volunteers who donate their time and dedicate it to your professional success. Nowhere but through NITA can you receive personalized coaching by a veritable “who’s who” of advocacy experts—trial lawyers, judges, law professors, and communications experts—from coast to coast.
“I will always be nervous, but after NITA I am not afraid.”
There’s no better place for you to practice what we preach than in a NITA classroom, where our advocacy instructors help you break down what makes for effective openings and closings, how to direct and cross to greater effect, what are the best practices for admitting and using exhibits, and utilizing the right tactics to impeach and rehabilitate witnesses. In addition to prepping and examining fact witnesses this program also incorporates real expert witnesses (fire investigators) into the workshops. You'll also learn jury selection techniques and have multiple opportunities to argue motions.
You may sign in for the program from 7:30am to 8:00am on Saturday, October 5. The program will start promptly at 8:00am on that date with the deposition program and will conclude Friday, October 11 at 5:00 pm with the trial program. The start and end times for this program are not finalized.

Attendees are encouraged to wear "courtroom attire" during the program. Not only might a lawyer's appearance have an effect on the trier of fact, and is thus a matter of concern for the serious advocate, but it has been our experience that attendees dressed more formally than the usual CLEattire find themselves more easily “getting into character” and presenting a more polished performance. Dressing for court also provides each attendee with more realistic feedback when watching the recorded performances each day. On occasion, there may be a casual day during the program that will be announced on-site.

"I survived and even thrived in the NITA Trial Advocacy program. I feel like I improved by leaps and bounds (although I still have a lot to learn). The criminal law team leader, Cathryn Crawford, was wonderful, always providing helpful constructive criticism with a smile. And the faculty (Judge Michael Washington, Terry Campbell, Tod Urban and Presita West) was first rate. They provided great feedback with real world perspective. (As an aside, I'd follow Judge Washington into battle any day!) In the final trial, I represented the defendant accused of commercial arson. It was a lot of work to prepare, but what an exhilarating ending to a great week! I have wanted to attend the program for many years and I wasn't disappointed!"Cheryl Bonner, 2019 Program Participant
