Last month, NITA and CLINIC teamed up with Catholic Charities Community Services of NYC for a public service program which trained 32 attorneys on trial skills. This three-day program was led by NITA Program Director, Michelle Mendez. Mendez has worked on many of NITA's immigration trial programs and continues to support NITA's public service mission. "New Yorkers are known as fighters. These participants lived up to this stereotype. They fought hard for the fictitious respondent in our training case file. NITA and CLINIC were honored to witness these advocates in action and are proud to have provided them with new tactics for the real, life-saving fights ahead," stated Mendez.
Furthermore, NITA Faculty, Tom Swett, who also dedicated his time to teach at this program, stated, "I am grateful to the immigration attorneys who invest their time to become better advocates for their clients. The work they do changes many lives and seeks justice for their vulnerable clients. I am happy that NITA has partnered with many immigrant law providers and am proud to be a part of these programs."
Not only did the faculty have a very positive experience at this program, but the participants as well had great things to say. One attendee stated, "The course was extremely helpful - as someone who did not take any trial advocacy classes in law school, I found this to be effective, well-timed, and a good crash course in trial advocacy."
Another attendee stated, "This was a well-constructed course with enthusiastic, and knowledgeable faculty who are good at providing guidance and feedback."
Thank you to NITA Program Director, Michelle Mendez, and NITA Faculty, Tom Swett, Stephanie Ledesma, and Aimee Maldonado, along with the CLINIC faculty members, for organizing such a successful program. At the conclusion, Catholic Charities Community Services of NYC's Special Projects Director, Maryann Tharappel, stated, "I have heard phenomenal feedback about the course, the trainers, and the individual experiences of staff. The confidence gained is already apparent and we are extremely grateful for that alone!"
