Johnson, Michael

MICHAEL JOHNSON is a Senior Legal Advisor for the United States Attorney’s Office in Little Rock, Arkansas.   He previously served as the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Arkansas, and as the First Assistant/Criminal Chief for the same office.  


He has been a member of the United States Department of Justice since 1973, having served 11 years in the Civil Rights Division during which he handled complex voting rights cases, criminal matters concerning racially motivated violence, and criminal police misconduct.  In 1984, Mr. Johnson was the 34th person in the history of the United States Justice Department named as Senior Litigation Counsel, a meritorious designation reflecting his advocacy skills in complex litigation.

Mr. Johnson has extensive experience in the investigation and prosecution of complex criminal matters including civil rights, public corruption, white collar crime, fraud, racketeering and tax matters. 


Mr. Johnson has been an Adjunct Professor of Law at the William H. Bowen, University of Arkansas Little Rock, School of Law since 1985 and has taught Criminal Law, Evidence, White Collar Crime, Trial Advocacy and Advanced Trial Advocacy.  He has also been an Instructor for the United States Department of Justice Advocacy Institute since 1980.  Mr. Johnson has served as an Instructor, a Team Leader, and an Assistant Team Leader for the National Institute of Trial Advocacy since 1987 including the National Session in Louisville, Colorado; the Southern Regional in Dallas, Texas; the North Central Regional in Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota; the Western Regional in San Francisco, California; the Northwest Regional in Seattle, Washington; and the program in Dublin, Ireland as well as at various deposition and in-house programs.  He has also participated as a faculty member in the pilot program for the Exceptional Advocacy Training Program conducted by NITA January-April 2010.


In 2005, Johnson lead a team that presented a seminar on Public Corruption Investigation and Prosecution in the Republic of Nigeria, and in 2006, a team that presented a seminar on Plea Bargaining to judges, prosecutors, defense counsel, and academics.                                                 


From August 2003 through October 2004, he was on assignment to the Republic of South Africa where he was responsible for overseeing the development of organized crime and racketeering prosecutions.  Since 2004, Mr. Johnson has returned to South Africa on a regular basis to continue his work with the South African government as a legal advisor on organized crime and racketeering matters, including conducting three Judicial Colloquiums for trial court and appellate court judges on the principles of racketeering and money laundering.


Mr. Johnson graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Washington State University and received his J.D. with Honors from the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington.
